SEO ROI Calculator

What is it?

What is the SEO ROI Calculator?

The SEO ROI Calculator is a free 3-minute tool that projects the 12-month return on an SEO investment. It takes five inputs (current monthly organic visitors, visitor-to-lead conversion rate, average deal size, monthly SEO spend, and projected monthly traffic growth) and produces three numbers: projected monthly visitors and revenue by month 12, cumulative 12-month revenue, and the payback period in months. Use it to build the business case for an SEO programme or to sanity-check a vendor proposal.

The 5 inputs

What you provide

Five inputs the calculator needs to project a 12-month outcome.

Monthly visitors

Current monthly organic visitors from Google Analytics or Search Console.

Conversion rate

Percentage of organic visitors who become leads or customers.

Average deal size

Mean value of a customer (one-off or first-year).

Monthly spend

Total monthly SEO investment (agency fees, content, tooling, internal time).

Growth rate

Projected monthly traffic growth rate (typical 10 to 25 percent for compounding SEO programmes).

Methodology

How the projection works

Visitors compound monthly at the growth rate you provide. Each month's leads are calculated from monthly visitors times conversion rate. Revenue is leads times average deal size. Cumulative revenue across 12 months minus total spend gives net ROI. Payback is the first month where cumulative revenue exceeds cumulative spend.

The compounding assumption is what makes SEO economics fundamentally different from paid acquisition. Paid traffic stops the day you stop paying. Organic traffic from content that is genuinely useful, ranks for real intent, and earns links continues to produce visits, leads, and revenue for years after the content shipped. Our calculator models that compounding linearly at the rate you supply, which under-states results in well-executed programmes (real compounding is usually super-linear in months 7 to 18) and over-states results in programmes that lose momentum after month 6.

Three assumptions worth checking against your business: first, that visitor-to-lead conversion rate stays constant as traffic grows. In reality, conversion often improves slightly as you build content that matches deeper-funnel intent and worsens slightly if traffic growth comes from broad informational queries. Second, that average deal size is stable. If you upsell or move upmarket, the same lead becomes more valuable over time. Third, that SEO spend is flat across the year. Some programmes front-load investment (technical fixes + content sprint) and ease back into maintenance from month 6.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is this SEO ROI projection?

The calculator gives a directional projection based on compounding monthly traffic growth at the rate you enter. Real SEO programmes show non-linear growth (slow first 90 days, faster compounding from month 6 onwards). Treat the output as a planning baseline, not a guarantee.

What is a realistic monthly traffic growth rate?

For a well-executed SEO programme on a low-competition niche, 10 to 25 percent monthly growth is realistic in months 4 to 12. Highly competitive markets (e.g., enterprise SaaS, finance) typically see 5 to 15 percent. Some local or long-tail niches can see 30 percent or more in early stages.

Why does the payback period sometimes show 12+ months?

Because SEO compounds. Early months produce less revenue than the monthly spend, but later months scale much higher. If your inputs produce a payback inside 12 months, the calculator shows the month. If not, the cumulative ROI in month 12 may still be positive even though monthly payback has not crossed cumulative spend.

What if my conversion rate or deal size is not constant?

Use a blended weighted average for both. For example, if 70% of deals are $1,000 and 30% are $5,000, your blended deal size is $2,200. For ranges, run the calculator twice (low and high) to get a sensitivity range.

Should I include just monthly agency fees or also internal costs?

Include everything that goes into the SEO programme: agency fees, in-house content production, technical SEO work, link-acquisition costs, and any tooling. The more accurate the cost input, the more useful the ROI projection.

Can you build me a more sophisticated model?

Does this calculator account for branded vs non-branded traffic?

No, it treats all organic traffic the same. In practice branded traffic (people Googling your company name) converts 3 to 5x higher than non-branded traffic but is also already largely captured. Non-branded traffic (people searching for your category or problem) is what new SEO investment grows, and it converts at the rate you input. If you want a sharper projection, exclude branded sessions from your starting visitor count and reduce your conversion rate to the non-branded baseline (typically 30 to 50 percent of blended).

What if our SEO budget is part-DIY and part-agency?

Use total economic cost across both. If your in-house content writer spends 20 hours a month on SEO content at a fully-loaded cost of USD 60 per hour, that is USD 1,200 of internal cost on top of agency fees. Hidden internal cost is the most common reason real SEO ROI looks worse than projected. Be honest about the inputs and the projection becomes useful instead of optimistic.

Why is SEO worth doing if results take 6 to 12 months?

Because the alternative is paying Google for clicks forever. A well-built organic engine produces compounding traffic for years after the investment, at a marginal cost that approaches zero. The calculator typically shows a payback period in the second half of year 1 and dramatically improving unit economics in year 2 and beyond. Paid acquisition costs only ever rise; organic improves with time and content depth.
