Google Ads Without Burning Budget: The First 90 Days

Most small businesses lose money on Google Ads in the first 90 days because they skip the boring foundations. Here is the foundation that prevents the burn and sets up profitable scale.

Google Ads burns budget in the first 90 days for predictable reasons: bad conversion tracking, broad-match keywords without negative discipline, sending paid traffic to a generic homepage, and trusting Smart Bidding before there is enough conversion data for the algorithm to learn from.

The 90-day foundation: week 1 to 2, set up rigorous conversion tracking. GA4, enhanced conversions, server-side tagging where possible, and conversions that match your CRM, not just form submissions. Week 3 to 4, build a tight account structure. Start with two or three Search campaigns on high-intent terms, exact and phrase match only, and a comprehensive negative keyword list seeded from competitor and irrelevant terms.

Week 5 to 8, build dedicated landing pages per campaign. The homepage is not a landing page. A campaign on a specific keyword needs a landing page that mirrors the keyword intent, has a single clear CTA, and converts at 4 to 8 percent or higher. Week 9 to 12, only after consistent conversion data is flowing, consider Performance Max or Smart Bidding. Switching to algorithmic bidding before you have 30 conversions per month per campaign is throwing money at a learning algorithm that cannot learn.

Done right, the 90-day foundation produces a sustainable cost per lead that scales. Skipped, you spend USD 10,000 to 30,000 figuring out what should have been done in setup.
