ISO 42001 versus NIST AI RMF: Which One Should You Adopt?

A side-by-side comparison of ISO 42001 (AI management system) and NIST AI RMF (risk framework). Why most organisations need both, and how to harmonise.

By Arvind Gautam

ISO 42001 is a certifiable management system standard (think ISO 27001 for AI). NIST AI RMF is a voluntary risk framework with four functions: Govern, Map, Measure, Manage. They are not alternatives. They sit at different layers of the same governance stack.

ISO 42001 gives you the auditable management system: documented policies, roles, procedures, internal audit, and continuous improvement. It is what your customers and regulators can verify through certification. NIST AI RMF gives you the risk taxonomy and control library: how to think about AI risk, what to measure, what controls to apply. It is what your engineering and risk teams use day-to-day.

Most serious organisations adopt both. ISO 42001 provides the wrapper and certification; NIST AI RMF provides the substantive controls inside the wrapper. The Magnis AI implementation pattern: map your existing controls to NIST AI RMF, package them under an ISO 42001 management system, and run the system on a quarterly Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle. Certification typically takes 9 to 18 months from kickoff.
