Marketing Attribution That Actually Works (Without an Eight-Person Analytics Team)
Last-click attribution lies. Multi-touch attribution is overkill for most SMBs. Here is the pragmatic middle that gets you 80 percent of the answer with a tenth of the effort.
Last-click attribution gives all credit to the final channel, ignoring the awareness and consideration channels that actually built the demand. Multi-touch attribution attempts to spread credit across the journey, but requires data infrastructure most SMBs do not have. The pragmatic middle is two-question survey-based attribution at the lead stage, combined with weekly channel-level review.
At every lead capture (signup, contact form, demo request), ask one question: 'How did you first hear about us?' with channel options (Google, LinkedIn, referral, podcast, other plus free text). This catches the brand-awareness driver. Optionally ask a second question: 'What made you finally reach out today?' This catches the consideration trigger.
Weekly, combine this self-reported data with platform metrics: Google Ads clicks and conversions, organic sessions and form fills from Search Console plus GA4, social media-attributed leads (where you can tag), and direct traffic with timestamps near recent campaign launches. The combined view is directional but actionable. You do not need a perfect attribution model. You need to know which 2 to 3 channels are working enough to keep funding, and which to cut. That decision rarely requires perfect data.
