SEO for SMBs: Where to Start When You Have No Budget and No Team

If you are an SMB owner with no SEO budget and no marketing team, this is the playbook. Three things to do this week, three to do this quarter, three to plan for this year.

The SMB SEO playbook is brutally short because the work that compounds is small in number. Three things this week: claim and complete your Google Business Profile (the single highest-leverage local SEO lever for any business with a service area or location); install Google Search Console and Google Analytics 4 on your site (you cannot improve what you do not measure); write or rewrite your home page to clearly state what you do, who you do it for, and where, in the first 200 words above the fold.

Three this quarter: build out 10 to 15 service pages, each targeting a specific buyer intent with unique copy (not duplicates); start a monthly content cadence of one to two pieces, focused on the questions your buyers actually ask, not on what you find interesting; ask every happy customer for a Google review (target 20 to 50 in the first quarter for a local business).

Three to plan for this year: build out a content cluster on your highest-value topic (15 to 30 supporting articles around one cornerstone guide); earn 5 to 10 quality backlinks through guest contributions and partnerships; consider a paid acquisition layer (Google Ads or Meta) to seed traffic while organic compounds. SEO compounds, but only if you start. The next 12 months either build the engine or do not.
